Fans are one of the most common pieces of machinery in the average home. They keep us cool in the summer, and they circulate air in the winter to keep us warm. But despite their essential nature, fans can be a nuisance if they’re left running all day long. This is because they create noise and air pollution. In this article, we will show you how to remove fan clutch without a tool. This is a great skill to have if you ever need to take care of a fan on your own.
Remove the Fan Clutch
If your fan clutch has worn out and you need to replace it, there is no need to take the car into a mechanic. You can easily remove the fan clutch himself with basic tools and some patience. Here’s how:
1) Park your car on a level surface. Make sure the emergency brake is off.
2) Remove the four bolts that hold down the engine cover.
3) Loosen the two screws that hold down the fan clutch housing.
4) Push up on the fan clutch housing and pull it away from the fan blade.
5) Loosen the nut that holds down the fan blade and remove it.
6) Replace the nut and screw on top of the fan blade, then replace the entire assembly. Tighten everything securely using a wrench.
Disconnect the Wires
If your fan clutch is failing, the easiest way to remove it is by disconnecting the wires. To do this, you will need a flat head screwdriver and a wire cutters. To disconnect the wires, start by removing the two Phillips head screws that hold the fan shroud in place. Once those are out, use the screwdriver to pry up on the fan shroud so that it can be pulled away from the motor. You will now see two black wires connected to each other near one side of the motor. Use your wire cutters to disconnect these wires. Be careful not to snag them on anything else while they are hanging loose. Once they are disconnected, put everything back together in reverse order and test your fan clutch operation before replacing it.
Remove the Screws
Removing the screws that hold the fan clutch in place can be a difficult, time-consuming process if you don’t have a tool to help you. There are several ways to remove the screws without a tool: using a screwdriver, using a pry bar, or using a hex wrench.
1. Use a screwdriver to remove the four screws that hold the fan clutch in place. Be careful not to overtighten them as they may strip the screw holes in the clutch.
2. Pry bar the fan clutch out of its housing using gentle pressure from either side of the housing. Make sure not to damage any of the internal components with your pry bar.
3. If using a hex wrench, first remove the two torx screws that hold on the shroud around the motor and then use the hex wrench to unscrew the fan clutch screws from their housings.
Remove the Cover
If you have a fan clutch on your engine, removing it without a tool can be a bit of a hassle. The fan clutch attaches to the fan blade by means of two Bushings. One Bushing is located on the shaft that the fan blade spins on, while the other is attached to the cover plate.
To remove the fan clutch without a tool, locate the two Bushings and twist them in opposite directions until they release from their respective mounts. Once free, pry up on the coverplate and pull it off of the fan blade. If your engine has an electronic Fan Control Module (ECM), you will likely need to disable it before disassembling the clutch assembly further.
