What is a cracked plastic radiator and how do you fix it?
A cracked plastic radiator is a common problem on vehicles. The heat from the engine can cause the plastic to crack. This can lead to coolant leaking and overheating. There are several ways to fix a cracked plastic radiator. You can replace the radiator, repair it, or fix it with adhesive and foam.
How to remove the cracked plastic radiator
If you have a cracked plastic radiator, there are a few things that you can do to try and fix it.
Step One: Remove the Existing Radiator
If the radiator is attached to the chassis with screws, remove them. If the radiator is attached with clips or rivets, use a wire brush to gently remove the material around the rivets or clips before pulling them out. Once the screws are removed, simply pull on the radiator until it comes off of the chassis.
If the radiator is attached with adhesive, use a knife to cut away at the adhesive until it comes free. Be careful not to tear the adhesive! Once free, use a flat head screwdriver to pry up one end of the radiator so that it can be pulled off of the chassis completely.
Step Two: Replacing The Radiator
There are two types of radiologicals available for replacement in a cracked plastic radiator: pressed steel or aluminum radiators.
For pressed steel radiators, search for an OEM part number online and order it from your favorite parts supplier. Most suppliers provide a lifetime warranty on their parts, so there’s little downside in ordering a new one if yours snaps during installation.
