If you’ve ever had to get your car unlocked in a hurry, you know that automotive ignition locks can be a real pain. Not only do they take time to unlock, but they can also be difficult to replace. Luckily, this guide will teach you how to remove an ignition lock cylinder quickly and easily. By following these simple steps, you’ll be able to free your car in no time at all.
What is an Ignition Lock Cylinder?
An ignition lock cylinder is a cylindrical device that is inserted into the keyway of a car’s ignition in order to prevent unauthorized use of the vehicle. When the key is turned to the “on” position, the engine will not start unless the correct code is entered into the immobilizer. Modern cars typically have four or five different codes, which must be memorized in order to drive the car without help from a mechanic.
How to Remove an Ignition Lock Cylinder
Remove the cylinder by prying it off of the plastic housing. Place a flathead screwdriver blade on one side of the keyway and use a hammer to pry up on the cylinder. It should pop off. If it doesn’t, Pry it off with your hands. Once it is removed, use your fingers to lever out the rubber insert that sits in the keyway. There should be two small screws holding this in place. Remove these screws and set them aside. Next, use a flathead screwdriver to gently pry open the retaining clip that secures the striker spring in place. This will allow you to pull out the striker spring and strike plate. Clean both parts thoroughly with rubbing alcohol or WD-40 before reinstalling them into their original location. Replace the cylinder by sliding it back over the plastic housing and securing it with the two screws that were removed earlier. Reinstall the retaining clip and striker spring, then replace the keyway cover
What to do if the Key Doesn’t Work
If the key doesn’t work, you can try to remove the cylinder using an adjustable wrench or a crowbar. If the cylinder is difficult to remove, you may need to use a pry bar.
What to Do if the Key Still Won’t Work
If the key still won’t work, there are a few things you can try. First, check to make sure that the key is inserted properly into the cylinder. Next, check to see if there is any corrosion on the keyway. If there is, use a wire brush to clean it off. Finally, try re-sellingering the connections if they are not completely broken.
